Art Action UK 2018 Symposium with artist Bontaro Dokuyama

Art in the Age of Crisis

8th September 2018, 10:00 - 4:30pm
at Deptford X Event Space
The world is changing rapidly and in an image-orientated culture, artists and designers are increasingly drawn into a complex battle of perceptions, when engaging with the issues impacting global culture. So, how to respond with integrity? How will this impact our future? For people in the creative world, these are the key questions.
For artists who have been involved in issues following the Great East Japan earthquake and tsunami disaster which triggered Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear disaster, and those who support them, these questions pose a particular challenge. Their efforts to highlight hugely complex issues are often dismissed or manipulated, and perceived as irrelevant and powerless in political decision-making. And yet the power of art is keenly felt and it has put pressure on the mainstream narratives in Japan.
This symposium will explore the possibilities of forging a different mode of engagement, with AAUK 2018 Residency Award winner artist Bontaro Dokuyama, along with specialist speakers, incloluding, Dr. Yoshitaka, Mouri and Dr. Ele Carpenter.

This is a free event, however you are advised to book your place as number of places are limited.

Bontaro Dokuyama, Artist
An artist originally from Fukushima, currently working in Tokyo. He has witnessed the devastating change after Fukushima Fallout Disaster, 11th March 2011, and his experience of despair became a motivation for him to confront arbitrariness and contradictions that he had overlooked. The profundity of his experience has catapult him into his current art practice. By employing wide ranging methodologies and approaches including political activism, installation, video, and socially engaged practice, Dokuyama questions our conformity and dependency on a given social mechanism, and seeks to uncover the complexity of the reality which is often hidden from our sight.

ART ACTION UK 2018 RESIDENCY ARTIST

We have received many proposals this year also, the process of nominating and selecting one residency artist was made harder as we also received a very strong list of candidates who’s proposals were all equally interesting.

After the long process of examining each proposals and hard discussions,

Art Action UK is delighted to announce

DOKUYAMA Bontaro as 2018 Art Action UK residency artist.

DOKUYAMA Bontaro, is an artist. Currently lives in Tokyo. On March 11, 2011, he witnessed the utterly change of his hometown, and he faced deep despair, which became a motivation for him to confront arbitrariness and contradictions that he had overlooked. At the same time, he began to rethink his own life as a salaried employee, who had been working as a corporate slave, and also began to observe the flock of workers, who are made unconscious of their dependency on the current social mechanism. These observations have driven him to create his own artwork. Through creating art works, he has been trying to directly face the inescapable situation and the mental state of people, who “want to escape but cannot escape” in the localities, where media-covered incidents and phenomena happened in the past, and trying to understand the cause and the mechanism of social conformity. By re-researching the forgotten places and memories left-behind by the society, he has been attempting to reveal the reality, and to thresh out new formula to create changes in these places and events. While being chased by everyday life, issues are no longer considered as issues, and they are simply ignored. He wishes to face these issues that have been assimilated and become invisible in the landscape of everyday life, by approaching them from different angles. This is induced by his desire to see the reality that should be present when the society starts to operate.
